What am I authorised to do?
Some legal activities are restricted to individuals/firms who are expressly authorised to carry out this work by a regulator under the Legal Services Act 2007.
These activities are:
- Exercising Rights of Audience (Advocacy)
- Litigation
- Probate activities (some aspects)
- Conveyancing (some aspects)
- Administration of Oaths
- Immigration work
Chartered Legal Executives (Fellows)
A Chartered Legal Executive is a Commissioner for Oaths and can exercise this right as an Authorised Person without supervision. Other restricted activities can only be carried out under the supervision of an appropriately Authorised Person.
CILEx Practitioners
CILEx Practitioners are authorised to carry out one or more of the restricted activities according to their specialisation, so for example a Family Litigator and Advocate is authorised to carry out family litigation and advocacy in the lower courts without supervision, subject to working in an authorised firm.
Other regulated members
Other grades of CILEx member are not authorised to carry out the restricted activities listed above, unless they are working under the supervision of an Authorised Person in accordance with the Legal Services Act 2007.
